International food security expert Dr. Fadel ELZUBI stated that the olive oil milling sector cannot be viewed as a mere traditional agricultural industry, but rather as an integrated economic system that links farmers, consumers, and both local and international markets. He emphasized that the sector has a clear social and environmental impact, as it strengthens livelihoods in rural areas, reduces internal migration, and preserves the agricultural heritage of olives within local culture.
Dr. ELZUBI added that the distinguished reputation of Jordanian olive oil is an intangible investment, yet one of great importance in consolidating the Kingdom’s competitiveness in regional and international markets. He warned, however, of the noticeable decline in olive production this year, driven by climate fluctuations and other factors, which could disrupt major national investments, reduce the operational capacity of mills, and negatively affect consumers through rising olive oil prices—at a time when Jordanians are already facing increasing living pressures.
He stressed that the decline in local olive and oil production must not be allowed to escalate into an economic and social crisis that undermines a sector of such importance. Dr. ELZUBI underscored the need to open the door to importing olives from neighboring countries such as Egypt and Syria, in order to ensure the continuity of mill operations and to meet local demand in a balanced and sustainable manner. He clarified that this approach is not intended to compete with local production, but rather to support it by keeping production lines running, protecting investments, and stabilizing prices in the domestic market.
Finally, he affirmed that developing the olive oil milling sector requires upgrading the technology used, raising quality standards, and improving marketing and export capacities. These steps, he noted, would secure Jordan’s position as a competitive producer of high‑quality olive oil in the region and the world, while reinforcing its future role in the national economy and the sustainability of rural development.
