International food security expert Dr. Fadel ELZUBI stated that Jordan has succeeded in recent years in building a cohesive food security system based on proactive planning and the integration of roles between the government and the industrial and commercial sectors. This, he explained, has contributed to maintaining market stability and ensuring the availability of essential commodities despite successive regional and global challenges.
ELZUBI clarified that the Higher Council for Food Security serves as an important institutional umbrella for coordinating national policies related to food security, bringing together all relevant stakeholders. This strengthens the state’s ability to make swift decisions based on accurate data concerning strategic reserves, supply chains, and levels of local production.
He pointed out that Jordan’s experience in recent years has been characterized by a shift from crisis management to proactive risk management, through the establishment of strategic reserves of essential commodities—chief among them wheat and barley—alongside efforts to diversify import sources and enhance the resilience of supply chains, thereby reducing the Kingdom’s exposure to regional or global disruptions.
ELZUBI added that strengthening local production, particularly in agriculture and food industries, constitutes a fundamental pillar of the national food security system.
He emphasized that the coming stage requires a set of strategic measures, foremost among them expanding investment in modern agriculture and agri-technology, improving the efficiency of water resource management, and developing logistics infrastructure and food storage and transport chains—all of which will enhance the resilience of the food supply system.
