Food has not become a luxury in the absolute sense, but healthy and balanced nutrition has increasingly turned into a class-based commodity. Those with stable incomes do not feel the impact of inflation on the quality of their diets, while one-third of the world’s population is forced to choose between cheap calories and proper nutrition.
This is not a matter of consumer luxury; it is a developmental failure. When the fundamental right to adequate nutrition becomes a scarce resource distributed according to income, the real cost is paid later in the form of chronic diseases, declining productivity, and mounting pressure on public health systems—particularly in Arab countries with high dependence on imports.
