International food security expert Dr. Fadel ELZUBI stated that the National Water Carrier Project represents a strategic transformation in Jordan’s water resource management, positioning itself as one of the most sustainable solutions to chronic water challenges and a key driver for strengthening food security across all governorates.
He explained that the project, based on desalinating Red Sea water in Aqaba and transporting it through a pipeline stretching nearly 450 kilometers, will provide around 300 million cubic meters annually of desalinated water. This will ease pressure on groundwater basins, reduce over-extraction, and enhance long-term sustainability of water resources.
ELZUBI highlighted that the project’s importance goes beyond water provision, as it integrates with national initiatives such as water harvesting and artificial intelligence technologies, thereby improving distribution efficiency among governorates and reducing losses.
He further noted that stable water supplies will enable agricultural governorates—particularly the Jordan Valley and its extensions in Irbid and Balqa—to expand cultivation in a planned manner and introduce high-value crops. This, he emphasized, will help narrow the import gap and reinforce Jordan’s food sovereignty.
