ELZUBI @ Roya TV – Food Security in Jordan

Four out of five indicators are moving in the right direction or remain at low levels. The only indicator that represents a real health burden is obesity — a form of malnutrition by excess, not by deficiency.

  • “Jordan is moving against the regional trend. While the number of hungry people in the Arab world rose to 77.5 million, the prevalence of undernourishment in Jordan fell from 17.9% to 12.2% over two reporting cycles.”
  • “The wasting rate of 2.3% is not an ordinary figure — it is among the lowest in the world, a testament more to Jordan’s primary health infrastructure than to sheer food abundance.”
  • “But let me be precise: these indicators measure outcomes, not resilience. Jordan purchases its food security; it does not produce it. Any good figure in a stable year does not tell us how the system will withstand a shock year.”
  • “The report warns that the conflicts of 2026 and energy prices will raise the cost of nutrient-rich foods in particular — meaning the coming risk is not about food quantity, but food quality. This explains why we can have obesity at 35% and anemia at the same time.”
  • “The priority is not expanding cultivated land — water does not allow it. The priority is water efficiency, cold chains, reducing losses, and diversifying corridors. Seventy to seventy-five percent of food costs are paid beyond the farm gate, not inside it.”
